The Metromaniacs @ The Duke, produced by Red Bull Theater
by David Ives
Through May 20th
This farce done the right way - totally quick witted fun !!
A totally campy romp.
Imagine Shakespeare in Love in rhyme but all fun no tears.
The costumes are FANTASITC & The cast displays a great combination of comedic timing and physical humor
Warning - If tremendous silliness and mistaken identities turn you off don't go.

See it if: You can sit through some painful dialouge and still enjoy the delivery or if you are particularly interested in the ethics of college admission.
Don't see it if: You look for sharp dialouge or strong & clear moral judgements by playwright or compelling stories of working class struggle that ring true
More to say:
The dialouge is redunant past the point of tolerance
The moral quandries presented by the plot do not seem particularly plausible
There are at least two scense that come off as random
and despite it all the actors rise to the occasion
The staging is quite inventive and works well - although some of the props and wardrobe could use some work
The Colored Museum @ the Harlem Rep
Written by George C Wolfe
Written in 1986 - the play still works - in that Black Americans are still fighting against stereotypes of all types - many of which are poked at in these vignettes & the company has added a few tweaks to reference more contemporary happenings.
I didn't particularly like the first few pieces & was considering an early exit when "Solider with a Secret" locked me to my seat thanks to a truly impressive & appropriately intense performance by Roberto Guzman.
Next up was Eric Myles as Miss Roj - & Wow ! - so hard to thread the needle of doing a campy transgender character with respect & a sense of humor
These short pieces are full of that kind of humor - where it could go so wrong but it goes so right because the humor is coming from a place of knowing - not ridicule.
There is one totally laugh out loud sketch - called the Hairpiece.
Myles & Guzman are impressive thru out - including a carefully orchestrated tussle down the stairs.
Showing on June 2nd & 16th at 7:00 pm
